Jonathon grew up in Bridgeport, West Virginia, where he attended Bridgeport High School. Throughout high school, Jonathon was a dedicated saxophone player, performing in multiple ensembles, including his high school marching, symphonic, and jazz bands, as well as numerous honor bands throughout West Virginia and the region. After performing with the University of Kentucky Honors Wind Ensemble during his senior year of high school, Jonathon found his undergraduate destination and enrolled at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2007.
Jonathon went on to complete his undergraduate education at the University of Kentucky. During his undergraduate studies, Jonathon began competing in mock trial, eventually serving as the organization’s President during his senior year. His experience with the mock trial program led to his decision to attend law school and become a litigator. Jonathon graduated in May 2011 summa cum laude with Honors in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy.
After obtaining his degree, Jonathon remained in Lexington to attend the University of Kentucky College of Law. While attending UK Law, Jonathon excelled in trial advocacy and competed for the College of Law’s Trial Advocacy Board (TAB). Throughout his second and third years of law school, Jonathon represented UK at competitions throughout Kentucky and the nation. He was recognized as the Best Advocate at the Kentucky Mock Trial Competition in 2012, where he and his partner also took first place. As second year law students, he and his partner won the Sixth Region and went on to compete at the TYLA National Trial Competition in San Antonio, Texas. As a third year, Jonathon served as President of TAB, and was a co-recipient of the Trial Advocacy Board Outstanding Trial Advocate Award with his trial partner of two years. Because of his dedication to TAB and trial advocacy, Jonathon received scholarships during his second and third years and was also selected by Dean as an Inaugural Student Member of the Central Kentucky Inn of Court. Jonathon received his J.D from UK in May 2014.
During law school, Jonathon worked for a small law firm in his hometown of Bridgeport, as well as for Fayette Circuit Judge Pamela Goodwine. After graduation, Jonathon worked for a defense firm in Lexington before moving back to West Virginia in the fall of 2015. After practicing in his home town for a year, he decided to return to the Bluegrass State. Jonathon joined the Sheffer Law Firm in November, 2016, where he currently practices medical malpractice and nursing home defense. Jonathon is a member of the West Virginia and Kentucky bars.
Music remains a significant part of Jonathon’s life. Outside of the office, you can often find him playing the saxophone, guitar, piano, or singing Sinatra karaoke.
